Big Island Canoe Paddling Championships Today
The Moku O Hawaii Outrigger Canoe Racing Association’s Aunty Maile Big Island Championships are being held today, Saturday, at Hilo Bay.
This morning kicks off with an 8 a.m. blessing followed by a special race for the youth alternate paddlers.
The daylong event will feature 15 canoe clubs featured in 40 races which officially start with the girls 12 event.
The state championships will be held at Hilo Bay on August 1st.
Defending team champion, Kai Opua, under head coach Eddie Hayward is the heavy favorite going into today’s championship.
Kai Opua is expected to fight off strong challenges from Keauhou and Puna in what should be an exciting 15-club title race.
Puna Canoe Club’s head coach, Afa Tuaolo, showcases a boys 14 crew which is undefeated on the regular season.
