Russia's Masterkova owns the world record in the mile
It was August 14, 1998 when Siberian born, Svetlana Masterkova, set the world record for the women’s mile with her time of 4 minutes 12.56 seconds.
Masterkova’s feat in the mile continues to stand as the world record for more than 11 years, due in part to track and field abandoning the distance in favor of the metric 1500 meter race.
El Guerrouj set the mile world record in 1999
MEN’S GREATEST MILER –Hicham El Guerrouj set the mile world record on July 7, 1999 with his time of 3 minutes 43.13 seconds.
