The top high school cheerleading squads from across Hawai‘i will compete for the coveted crown in the 11th Annual Zippy’s/HHSAA State Championships, Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Stan Sheriff Center. This year’s field features three teams in the large (11 to 18-person squad) division and 13 teams in the medium (maximum 10-person squad) division.
In what could be the biggest showdown in recent HHSAA cheer history, four-time defending Large Division champion Kamehameha and six-time defending Medium Division champ Radford will both be competing for the Large Division title. The two programs have combined to win 15 of the 20 state crowns overall. Rules & Scoring:
Each team will perform one routine that incorporates both cheer and dance, in a time span no longer than 2 minutes, 30 seconds.
Squads must not exceed a maximum of 1 minute, 30 seconds of music and must perform a minimum of 35 seconds for cheer/chant.
A judges panel consisting of three performance judges, one “range” judge, three safety judges and two timers will help determine each team’s score out of a maximum 375 points. Penalties (overall point deductions) will be assessed for violations in time limit, safety regulations and missed or dropped stunts or tumbling.
In the case of a tie, the total points from the “cheerleading fundamentals” section on the score sheet will determine the winner. In the event there is a second tie, the total points from the “overall performance” section on the score sheet will determine the winner.
In the event of a third tie, the judges will rank the teams and this will determine the winner.
Exhibition performances:
JV and intermediate performances will be included in the schedule but will not count toward the state championship.
There also will be exhibition performances by Cheer 808, University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University squads.
