Bandits at Hilo Marathon?

What is a bandit? A person who runs in a race without paying an entry fee and without a running number.

Bandits are like some shoplifters, they take from the race without really knowing they are doing anything wrong.

There are a few people that will walk through a supermarket and snack on the grapes in the produce department of take a cup of coffee and drink it while shopping, never paying for what they have consumed.

The Hilo Marathon spent thousands of dollars getting road closure permits, paying for off duty police officers, providing for aid stations, and more. Those bandits that did not pay for any of these services stole from the race.

Road Runners Clubs of America, the governing body for many certified and insured races such as the Hilo Marathon, suggest that bandits, when caught, should be banned from all RRCA events for one year the first time and banned for life the second time they are caught.

The people pictured are without numbers and may have been bandits during the running of the Hilo Marathon on March 22.

  1. Never bandit a race. It is not fair to the race organizers. It is not fair to the volunteers. It is not fair to the sponsors. It is not fair to the other athletes. It may not be fair to the roads/trails/town infrastructure that the race takes place in. It is just something that you should always avoid, and never feel bad about calling somebody out on it.

  2. Who would be crazy enough to bandit a friggin Marathon!

Holy Cow! I couldn’t bring myself to get PAID to run a Marathon… Less yet do it for free.

Now to sneak in!!! That’s even more funny.

I’m guessing that possibly some of the numbers may have fell off?

  4. Great work on putting those photos up. I ran a half marathon last month and paid over $100 for the registration fee. You can imagine my horror when I saw photos on facebook that certain bandits had ran the course, gladly accepted the medals, and helped themselves to the food and refreshments that paying runners fronted the bill for. These thieves were bragging on how fun it was and that it was “funny” they crashed the course and didn’t get caught. I was livid! I hope that someone did email you with the names of these hideous, free loading culprits. They will keep doing it until they are caught!
