Former Waiakea Cross-Country Runner – Peter Sur
A former Waiakea High School cross-country runner and now journalist for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald was inducted into Na Mea Kupaianaha O Waiakea – “All that is extraordinary and wonderful about Waiakea High School.”
Under the guidance of WHS librarian and project coordinator, Gloria Kobayashi, Peter Sur, was inducted into the wall of honor in 2006.
Sur ran cross-country all four years for his former teacher and coach, Big Dog, and he can still recall some of his most challenging races.
Sur was most fondly remembered for throwing up in the final 150 yards of his 3-mile races as he would usually over hydrate.
Maybe not the most talented of runners, Sur always gave 100 percent in everything he did. Fortunately for the Big Island that he turned out to be one exceptionally gifted writer.
Sur actually got his journalistic start writing in the sports department under the guidance of Bill O’Rear. Today Mr. Sur’s stories can be found on the front page as he does many feature stories.
I believe that when his younger brother, Gary, beat him in a 3-mile race a couple of years ago the elder Sur decided to hang up his harrier shoes.
