Big Island International Marathon SOLD OUT!

BIIM Scheduled for March 20, 2011

Marathon and Half-Marathon is SOLD OUT!

The Big Island International Marathon scheduled for March 20, 2011 has sold out of all available slots in both the full and half marathons.

No waiting list will be made and runners are advised that they will not be able to switch or transfer their slots in this race.  If an injury does occur you may request to be switched to the 5K race only.

The 5K run/walk still has a number of slots available and that race will be closed once it has hit capacity. (The 5K sold out on March 6 and anyone mailing in their application after that date will have it returned)

For those in the full marathon who decide on race day to run only the half marathon they will be disqualified and not given a finishers tee shirt or medal.

Tee shirts are for finishers only and failure to finish the race that you signed up for will prevent you from receiving any recognition.

Bandits (those without official running numbers) are prohibited from participation and aid stations will not provide any water or Gatorade.  Police have been notified to remove runners who do not have a running number pinned to the front of their shirts or shorts.

Anyone mailing in an application for either of these races, postmarked after Jan 3, 2011, will have their checks returned.

These rules are established to be fair and equitable to everyone involved. No exceptions will be made.

  1. You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself.

  2. Can you please tell me what time the marathon begins? I cannot find the start time on the ‘official’ website or on your blog. Thank you very much. Peggy

    • 6 am – it says that right at the top of each application

  3. Will you be sending out an informational package to the runners? I haven’t received confirmation on my entry yet and want to verify I’m a registered runner.

    • Confirmation is you cancelled check. Everything you need to know about packet pickup is on the web site, http://www.hilomarathon.org and there will be more information in your runners packet.

  4. Wayne. Will you tell us the number you capped your race at? And the reason you are limiting it so? And why you won’t let people switch distances? Your comments and attitude don’t show a lot of Aloha, Its a real shame as this 1/2 is the most beautiful course and you don’t seem interested in expanding your accommodations to be more inclusive and show the Aloha most Hawaii race directors have worked hard to establish.

    • Great questions and I’m glad you asked them.
Our race is one of the most unique in the state and in the nation. The Board of Directors of the Big Island International Marathon has, for quite some time, grappled with some of the questions you have presented.
One of the unique problems that present itself is the fact that we need to transport the marathon and half marathon participants to the starting line, some 10 miles outside of Hilo.
The starting area itself is small and lacks the sheltered space to accommodate a large group of people. It is located in a quiet community setting and we need to be respectful to the people and their families to keep the area at a minimal noise level.
The back roads that the race covers is also residential and we need to be sensitive to the environmental impact that a larger race might have on this tranquil setting.
Over the past 14 years this race has grown, slowly, and is at a point where the board, working with the County government, has to look at how much additional growth, if any, should we allow.
This year the marathon and half marathon limit was set at 300 entries per race and I allowed for a five percent increase with the belief that there is usually a five percent no show on race day.
Part of our attraction is that we are a small race and we wish, at this time, to continue to be small. We do not want to be like other Hawaii marathons and want to continue to be respectful of the community and sensitive to its surrounding environment while maintaining an intimate race setting.
Knowing that we will continue to limit the amount of entries in our marathon and half marathon people will need to register early. The 2011 race reached its capacity on January 3 and hopefully the 2012 race will be filled by December 2011.
I know of no other marathon or half marathon in the State of Hawaii that limits its entries and I am very proud of the fact that we are, in that regard.
As far as showing “Aloha” my major concern is showing the community and the environment that we have the deepest respect for both and our top “Aloha” priority will always be to our neighbors and to the aina.

  5. J McDaniel…if you dont like waynes response..dont do the race…do one of the bigger races offered..We need to respect the aina..if you cant register early its your fault..dont blame the race!
If a race is closed how can you switch into it?
I like this race because of its size and scenery! It is beautiful. Hope it stays this way! Please continue to limit runners!
I always enter the early bird!

  6. Thanks for limiting the number of runners!
This is truly a great race. I have done it five times and love the smaller numbers of runners . Please do not make this into one or the larger race..It is really a special Hilo marathon..If someone wants a bigger race there are plenty of those here in hawaii..Keep this race and honor the aina!

  7. Want a big race go somewhere else..or just enter this race early!
I guess J McD doesnt do many races..I dont think he is aware of the small print on applications that say switching races is not permitted!

  8. If there were one spot along this race for a blogger to take pictures… where would you suggest a strategic place for the best chance at getting some good pictures w/out missing the ending of the race?

Congrats on being sold out! I would assume that’s a good thing!

  10. Advid runner visiting from Chicago-last minute ( No wonder it was so hard to get lodging).
Question…Need any more volunteers? Is it really to late for even the 5K?

    Comment by Greta | March 14, 2011 | Reply

    • Yes, sorry, all of our races are filled and we are not taking any further registration. I can always use additional help on race day. Email me at waiakeabigdog@aol.com if you are interested in volunteering.
