The Vulcan Athletic Club luncheon, held on Tuesday Nov 8, featured speakers from their basketball program.

First up was Men’s Coach Jeff Law along with senior forward Zach Wilde. Law in his 14th season with UHH has 194 wins and 150 losses as the Vulcan head coach.  Law noted that last year’s Pac West Conference winner, BYUH, is again the team to beat. “We bring 9 new players and 6 returnees,” Law said.  “We have lots of holes to fill, but we have a more athletic team with better shooters.”

Wilde, a senior from Washington State, is a double major and is currently interning with the County Prosecutor’s Office.”I’m excited about this year’s team,” Wilde said.  “My personal goal is to have double-doubles in every game this year and to become an All American.”  After graduation Wilde is hoping to land a graduate coaching position.

Women’s Coach Kaneshiro is optimistic about this years squad, stating that they are an improvement over last year.

“We are headed in the right direction,” second year coach Kaneshiro said.  “We open at UH Manoa on Friday, 11-11.

Kaneshiro said the polls picked Grand Canyon to win the conference and Dixie State to finish second, with the Vulcans picked to finish 7th.

“Our overall team speed is better than last year,” Kaneshiro said.  Kaneshiro team has 8 new players with 7 returnees.

“We’re better than last year,” Coach Kaneshiro said.

Both the men and women basketball programs open their season this Friday and are hopeful that the public will come out and watch them play.

Mata is a junior and is a graduate of Farrington High School.  “Our team is a work in progress,” she said.  “We have more talent this year and our team chemistry is good.”

Mata is determined to prove that the Vulcans are much better than their seventh place preseason pick.
