Youth Rugby growing on the Big Island – and it’s SAFE

Rugby under 10, mixed division

Youth Rugby is very safe. Younger kids play Touch Rugby, a 2 hand touch game that is probably safer than soccer – no headers!

Tackle Rugby is a contact sport that is played safely on 6 continents by millions of kids all over the world. Tackle Rugby is played under close supervision with qualified coaches and referees. Special rule modifications make the game safer and scrums less powerful to prevent injury.

Rugby tackles require tacklers to ‘wrap’ the player and bring him safely to the ground. Studies have shown no significant difference in injury rate between Rugby and other sports.

  1. or 13-and-under, 15-and-under, and 17-and-under boys, the current available option is tackle only. Fort Hunt Rugby currently offers tackle rugby to boys 12-17 (11s may play up), and to girls 13-17 (12s may play up). Touch is a possibility for older players, but this is dependent on the number of players available who want to play touch; our experience since 2006 shows that almost all players–boys and girls alike–desire to move up to tackle rugby. We have never formed a touch team above the U-11 age level.
