Running with the Big Dog

DeLorm dedicating Ironman New Zeland to former cross country coach

I am humbled to learn that one of my former cross country runners, Garrett DeLorm, Waiakea class of 2000, has dedicated his first Ironman, New Zealand, to me.    Here is what Garrett wrote:

I’m very sorry to hear about the cancer, but am glad to hear you’re doing a good job with the recovery so far. My prayers go out to you and your family for your continued well-being. Give ’em hell coach. Nothing can keep down the big dog.

My Ironman is next Saturday (Friday in the US), and I’d like to dedicate my race to you and your fight. You helped me realize my potential as a runner, and athlete in general, and for that I’ll forever be grateful. Dedicating the race is the least I could do. The pain and struggles that I’ll endure next Saturday are far short of what I’m sure you’ve had to endure. In dark times during the race when the pain is overwhelming and thoughts of quitting cross my mind, I’ll remind myself of my ‘ol coach, and it will help push me onward.

If you’re absolutely bored on Friday afternoon/evening, the race is going to be broacast live on Ironman.com. The starting gun is at 7am Saturday morning New Zealand time. I expect to finish somewhere around 11:30:00 total time, but really, who knows.
