Running with the Big Dog

Bill Sergeant, 71, scorches course record during Hilo Marathon, March 2012

Hi Wayne.          This email is a little belated. Sorry for that.

I really enjoyed my stay in Hilo and my tours of the Big Island – meeting you and so many other friendly natives and runners.

The run/route was great. The rain was to be expected I suppose.

The folks along the route “person”ing the aid stations and cheering us on (especially we slower runners) in spite of the constant rainfall was wonderful and greatly appreciated. Please let them know, belatedly, that another runner has complemented them. I bet they have received lots of complements.

I was lucky enough to come in 1st in my 70-75 age bracket.

Oh, and when I went on to the records page I found that my 4:54+ “scorched” J the old age group record for the course. I know there are lots of 70+ ers who can run faster than 4:54, including me, but if you update that age group entry I’d be honored. I can assure you that I did not swim or surf any portion of the race. 🙂

Most importantly I sure hope that your health is great. I have not yet gone onto your Blog to get updated – but will do so. Fellows like you who run and support us other runners and who a nice family – complete with daughter – “deserve a break today.” So I hope all is well.

I am running in AK on the 23rd to complete the 50 States. And, am running the Triple Crown Series in Colorado – which includes the Pikes Peak Marathon again in August. Still winning or coming in 2nd in my age-group so far. Was 1st up in Madison WI in a half in 2:02. Also am re-climbing 14rs in Colorado and knocking off some more State high points.

I think that when I return to HI it will definitely be to the Big Island – due in large part to you and your race director efforts and the wonderful folks I met out there in my 10-day stay.

 Thanks again,             Bill Sergeant
