Inaugural Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Thanksgiving Day 5K Walk/Run

Big Island Road Runners the local affiliate of Road Runner Clubs of America announces if First Annual Wayne “Big Dog” Jospeh Thanksgiving Day 5K Walk/Run.   The Walk/Run will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 22.  The start and finish will be at the parking area of Moku Ola or Coconut Island off of Banyan Drive in Hilo.  The walk run starts at 7:30 am with on-site registration happening just prior to the event start. The event is free and all are welcome.  There is no cost for the event, however participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation for the Salvation Amry to help needy families during the upcoming holiday season.  On a day set aside to give thanks, the Big Island Road Runners want to bring the community out for  a healthy way to start the day while acknowledging the tremendous amount of extremely important service Wayne Joseph has gvien to the Big Island Comminuty.  As Vietnam Army Veteran, a long time teacher, cross country coach, executive director of the Big Island International Marathon, former Race Director of the Volcano Marathon, former president of the Big Island Road Runners, a leader in the HSTA retirees organization, former member of the County of Hawaii’s Ethics Commission, a long time sports wirter and columnist for the Hawaii Tribune Herald. 

Current President of the Big Island Road Runners Steve Pavao said, “Wayne has had such a tremendous impact on so many lives in our community, the thousands that have read his inspiring columns weekly, the hundreds of youth he has taught and coached, the thousands that have run in events he has coordinated.  He was a major influence in my life.  Reading his column inspired me to get active and make a  lifestyle change.  Wayne is a true hero and we honor him by giving thanks and giving back to our community.”

All walkers and runners are wlecome.  This is a walker friendly event.  People can bring strollers and pets as well.  There is no time limit and all are welcome.  Membership is not required for this event.  There will be no time limit.  There will be post run refreshments.  for inquiries call Steve Pavao at 430-0267

BIRR to host Hilo Bay 5 & 10 K’s on Sept 9

 

The Big Island Road Runners will be hosting its annual Hilo Bay 5K and 10K races on Seotembet 9 , 2012.  Both races start at 7:30am.  Both races cost $20 for Big Island Road Runners members and $25 for non-members.  The events are open to the public and the 5K is a walk friendly event.  The races start and end at the parking lot of Moku Ola or Coconut Island.  Race applications can be found at Spencers Fitness and The Bike Hub.  The can also be dowloaded from the club’s webiste  www.bigislandroadrunners.org   While pre-registration is encouraged, there will be race day registration as well.   All participants will be given a dry-tech t-shirt and there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd places awards in both men’s and women’s over all and masters divisions.  There will also be lucky number prizes.  For more information contact Steve Pavao at 430-0267.

Big Island Road Runners Mana 10 mile and 10K on August 5, 2012

PRESENTS:    MANA 10s – 10 MILE and 10K      Sunday, August 5, 2012    7:30 AM    Mana Road, Waimea

DIRECTIONS:  
From Hilo, take Hwy 19 North to Waimea, turn left onto Mana Road across from the

Department of Hawaiian Homelands Farmer’s Market. (Look for Big Island Road Runners signs.) Proceed to
the T in the road, turn left at the stop sign, and park on the side of the road.
COURSE:
This beautiful out and back course runs along the famous Mana Road on a combination of asphalt

and hard packed red dirt. Start on a quiet country road and run over rolling hills with beautiful views of open
pasture land and Mauna Kea and Kohala Mountains. Horses and cattle will watch you run by with quiet
contemplation and if you are lucky you may even see some wild turkey.

ENTRY FEE:
$10 $5
(BIRR membership is only $20 a year. Please join and become a part of our active club.)
RACE DAY REGISTRATION:
Check-in from 6:30 to 7:15am
AID STATIONS:
Water provided every 2 miles on the course
FACILITIES:
Amenities include port-a-lets and covered tents. Parking is available on the side of the road.

Carpooling is encouraged.
POST RACE/AWARDS:

1st

Overall Male and Female awards. Lucky Number Prize Drawings. Post race

refreshments will be offered including; Gatorade, water, bananas and other food stuffs.
