Waiakea Girls Win BIIF Team Title

Coach Tallett

The Waiakea girl’s tennis squad clinched the Big Island Interscholastic Federation team title on their home court this past Saturday by beating a spunky Kamehameha squad 4-1.

Prior to the match first year Waiakea Coach Adelbert Tallett, Jr. spoke of the importance of playing Kamehameha.

“This is a really big match for us as it will determine the team title,” he said. “Today is also going to be a win, win situation for me as I am a current and former Warrior.”

Tallett, a 1979 graduate of Kamehameha, Oahu, had looked forward to playing his former Alma Mater all season long.

“This is the highlight of my entire season,” Tallett said.  “I was born and raised on the Big Island and attended St. Joseph before being admitted to Kamehameha where I played three years on their varsity tennis team.”

Tallett and the public school Warriors played a straight up match, leaving their number one singles player, Ceara Sumida, to face Kamehameha’s Rebekah Friel.

Ceara Sumida

“I felt really good today,” Sumida said of her 6-0, 6-1 victory.  “I got most of my first serves in and my transition to the net worked fairly well.”

Sumida, ranked number two in the BIIF behind Kealakehe’s Sayo Tsukamoto, wasted little time dispatching Friel after rain delayed the match for nearly two hours.

“I never played her (Friel) before and I didn’t know what to expect, but I went in thinking positive and it all worked out well,” Sumida said.

In number 2 singles Waiakea played Candice Roddie against Kamehameha’s Sadie Arakaki with Roddie winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

“I knew the strength of Kamehameha rested with their doubles teams, but I wanted to keep my singles players in position to get the highest seed possible when it comes to the BIIF championships,” Tallett, Jr. said.

The Kamehameha girls came into the match with only one loss, a 4-1 defeat to Kealakehe earlier in the season.  A win for the private school Warriors would have put the BIIF girl’s team title into a three way tie, but Waiakea would have none of that as their team rose to the occasion.

Kamehameha used their number 1 doubles team of Kahea Kanuha and Amanda Lerma to gain their lone victory in team play by beating Qianna Hironaka and Shala Kushi 6-1, 6-4.

The public school Warriors came roaring back in number 2 and 3 doubles play with Kaede Kanazawa and Stephanie Matsuura beating Corin Kim and Jaci Macida 7-6, 6-3 and with the help of Leisha Ishikawa and Chelsea Sato getting past Shariyah Campbell and Tehani Sewell 6-0, 6-4.

“I my very excited for our girls winning the BIIF team title,” Tallett, Jr. said.  “Our girls are a very good, disciplined team and I have to give a lot of credit to Kamehameha for teaching me how to play the game.”

Tallett also had high praise for his assistant coach, Roy Hatanaka, and for the support of the team’s parents.

“I think our team chemistry worked really well this year,” Sumida said.  “I’m really happy for the team as everything just fell into place.”

Waiakea’s boys team, playing for the runner up position as Kealakehe remained undefeated, beat Kamehameha 5-0 with their ace singles players, Kaito Mizutani and Kallen Mizuguchi sweeping to easy victories.

Mizuguchi was placed into the number 1 position and faced Matt Yamamoto winning in straight sets of 6-0, 6-1, while Mizutani was regulated to the #2 spot and beat Elijah Pung 6-0, 6-0.

Both Mizuguchi and Mizutani are undefeated in BIIF play and neither boy has lost a set all season long.

“Kallen is ranked #6 in the state for boys 18 and Kaito is ranked #2 for the boys 16,” Coach Bill Brilhante, Jr. said.

In doubles play Waiakea pitted Isaiah Brilhante and Christopher Simmons against Kamehameha’s #1 doubles team in Keoni Wong and Shaun Kagawa with Simmons and Brilhante winning in a close match 6-2. 4-6, 6-2.

Waiakea’s other doubles teams of Chad Hara and Caden Yamamoto, 7-5, 6-1, and Kris Shigehara and Johnathan Torigoe, 6-4, 6-2 made it a clean sweep for the Warriors.

The BIIF will next host a Seeding Tournament at Holua on Saturday.  Schools are limited to two singles and two doubles entries and according to Coach Bill Brilhante the tourney will allow schools an opportunity to meet the two match minimum requirement for athletes to compete in the BIIF championships set for April 24.
