Vulcan Athletic Club showcases Baseball and Softball Programs
Jaime Wallin enters her second season as the head coach of the softball program. The 2011 team amassed an overall season record of 28-14 and a Pac West record of 21-7. Wallin played collegiate softball at Pace University and Queens College. She was a 1997 all-conference selection at Pace and a two-time all-conference player at Queens. She has held coaching positions at Lafayette College, Sonoma State, Stony Brook, UC-Davis and Queens College
“Pitching makes the biggest difference in softball,” Wallin said. “I feel strongly about what our freshmen class can do as we are not a team of superstars. We need to out smart our opponents.”
The Vulcan softball team did not make post season last year and Wallin’s goals for this year is to help her team make postseason play.
Pictured with Women’s Softball Coach Jaime Walin is Bryanne Hardy.
Hardy, a senior, bats third in the order and led the team in several areas. For her hardwork and talent Hardy was named 1st Team All Region last season. She majors in Administration of Justice and will graduate in the Spring.
Coach Joey Estrella enters his 33rd season and has led the Vulcans to three NAIA world series and won five NAIA district championships in the 1980s. The Vulcans made the move from NAIA to the NCAA Division I level under Estrella.
Last season the Vulcans were 16-16 and carried 12 seniors on the team. This season the Vulcans have 5 seniors, 17 juniors, 5 sophomores and 6 freshmen.
“The PAC West Confrence could be ranked #4 in the nation based on strength of teams played,” Estrella said.
With a 962 fielding percentage Estrella believes that the Vulcans need to work on DEFENSE! “Pitching is a concern with a lack of experience on the mound,” Estrella said.
Pictured with Coach Joey Estrella is Jonathan James who spoke at the VAC luncheon. James is a 6-2, 200 pound junior and a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama. The number 3 batter in the lineup was named All Confrence last year with a 439 on base percentage. “I think our starting 9 looks good,” James said. “My favorite pitch as a batter is the fastball and I’m a big Red Sox fan.”
The Vulcan’s carry a 40 man roster and they have 7 red shirts. “We have lots of talent to look at,” Estrella said
