Hungarian Shatters Big Island Marathons Womens Record

Hungarian etches name into racord books, marathon photos by Brad Ballesteros

Reka Batai came a long way from Hungry to establish the new womens overall course record during the 13th annual Big Island International Marathon held on Sunday, March 21.

Batai also etched her name into the record books by establishing the new 25 – 29  age group record.  Coming from Pecs-Baranya, Hungry Batai ran  2 hours 53 minutes and 13 seconds which translates to a  06:36 per mile pace.

Her time for the 26.2 mile race placed her fourth overall and only three minutes behind the overall winner, Billy Barnett of Volcano.

Overall champion, Billy Barnett of Volcano

For Barnett, who crossed the finishline in 2 hours 50 minutes and 20 seconds, this was his first marathon win of his young and promising distance career.  Kona’s Jason Braswell followed Barnett and claimed second overall.

Jason Braswell, owner of the Big Island Running Company, takes second

  1. I found Billy Barnett’s photo – he’s the guy standing against the sky in the best seller by Christopher McDougall: Born To Run. He is also in the book. He has a great mellow blog at

where he talks about the marathon this year and why he vamoosed right away afterwards.

      • Aloha Wayne! Hope to do BIIM again in say 2012. I see this yr they ceased Run to the Sun on Haleakala so BIIM-RTS back2back is no longer possible, which is probably a blessing in disguise. Glad to see BIIM participation and appreciation steadily increasing!
