Haleakala’s Run to the Sun Cancelled

36.2 mile running event - cancelled

The 2010 Haleakala Run to the Sun event, usually scheduled for the third Saturday in March, has been cancelled according to former race director Bram DenHann.

DenHaan had been the race director for the past seven years and when he stepped down no one stepped forward.

A 36.2-mile ultra marathon starting at sea level and climbing to the 10,023 feet summit of Haleakala, the legendary “House of the Sun.” This challenging course was not for the novice marathoner and entrants must be 18 years or older to have participated.

The event required the maximum 175 participants to rigorously meet the strict 10-hour time limit.

The Run to the Sun was one of Valley Isle Road Runners’ signature events. It is a VERY difficult and COSTLY event to organize and direct. In the past the event had not been able to cover its costs even with the maximum number of runners. Due to the event’s uniqueness and the scenic beauty of the race course, Valley Isle Road Runners (VIRR) and Hawaii Ultra Running Team (HURT) had tried to keep this event alive indefinitely for everyone to enjoy.
